Callirhoe digitata or Fringed Poppy Mallow and sometimes called winecup is a very attractive plant growing 2 to 5 feet tall with bright magenta flowers. Fringed Poppy Mallow is best grown in full sun or light shade and average, well drained soil. It provides an attractive addition to a formal perennial butterfly garden or naturalized in a prairie meadow.  Plant native Callirhoe digitata with Missouri Black-eyed Susan, Prairie Dropseed, Sand Coreopsis, Shrubby St. John's Wort, and blazing stars like Narrow-leaf Gayfeather and Rough Blazing Star.  Needs well drained soil.

Plant Fringed Poppy mallow seed outside in a prepared bed in summer or fall for germination the next spring.  When planting Callirhoe digitata seeds in the spring germination may be improved with a hot water treatment.  Submerge the seeds in hot water (about 180 degrees) allowing them to soak overnight as the water cools before planting.

Native Fringed Poppy Mallow is an attractive wildflower plant occurring naturally in rocky open woods, glades, and prairies in Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma.  Malvaceae (Mallow Family)

The map below shows areas where Callirhoe digitata plants grow wild but it can be planted and will grow over most of the Midwest and Eastern US.  USDA plant hardiness zones 4 to 8.
