Gaillardia pulchella has several common names including Indian Blanket, Blanket Flower, and Firewheel.  Indian Blanket Flower, the state wildflower of Oklahoma is an impressive and beautiful native flower found growing along roadsides, in fields and pastures, sometimes covering large areas.  Galardia pulchella seems to thrive in heat and is native from Colorado and New Mexico east to Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Louisiana: introduced in Missouri east to the Atlantic states.  Full sun and good drainage are essential.  Gaillardia pulchella flower heads are  daisylike blossoms having dark reddish brown domed centers with yellow and red ray flowers, usually red marked with brilliant yellow on the ends of the petals.  Indian Blanket Flower seeds take approximately 20 days to sprout with the first blooms appearing approximately 3 months later.  Indian Blanket flower blooms from mid-summer until frost and is an astounding cut flower.
