Helianthus hirsutus, known commonly as Bristly Sunflower, Hairy Sunflower or stiff-haired Sunflower, is a showy colony forming sunflower growing up to 4 feet tall with numerous 3 inch flower heads.  Bristly Sunflower is often found growing in open woods in the Ozarks where it is browsed by white tailed deer. This showy wildflower is a food source for butterflies and songbirds and can be planted in the shade garden or prairie meadow.

Native Hairy Sunflower occurs wild in rocky or dry open woods, savannas, prairies, and along roadsides from Pennsylvania to Minnesota, south to Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas , and Oklahoma.
