Liatris squarrosa
, Scaly Blazing Star, is a shorter blazing star or gayfeather for use in wild flower rock gardens in full sun with average to dry soil.  Liatris squarrosa, like other blazing stars is very attractive to butterflies and will be excellent in the butterfly garden and rock garden.

Liatris squarrosa grows in dry to average rocky or sandy soils and is one of the earliest Liatris to bloom.  Scaly gayfeather or blazing star may have one or several stems each erect unbranched and 10-24 in. tall. Its leaves are not as numerous as in most other Liatris species. Tuft-like red-violet flower heads are few and openly spaced in a spike along the top of the stem.

Liatris squarrosa, Scaly Blazing Star grows wild on rocky glades, bluffs and open woods from Florida to Alabama and Louisiana, North to Delaware, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri
when planted will grow over a much larger area.  usda plant hardiness zones 3 to 9
