Silphium = Ancient Greek name of another resin-producing plant (probably now extinct)
integrifolium = Leaves entire (undivided)

Silphium integrifolium, Rosinweed is a stout attractive wildflower often found growing in colonies.  There are several large 3 inch flowers on short stalks at the top of the plant, each with 15-35 yellow petals surrounding a central disk.  Rosinweed's large yellow flowers provide nectar for butterflies and its seeds are enjoyed by many songbirds.

Native Rosinweed occurs naturally in savannas, glades, rocky or dry open woods, and mesic, deep soil prairies of the tallgrass region from Indiana to Wisconsin and Iowa, south to Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas.  Asteraceae (Aster Family)

The map below shows areas where native Rosin Weed grows wild, it is hardy over a much wider area if planted.  Plant in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 9.
