Verbena stricta Hoary Vervain is an attractive upright North American native plant with 1 to several showy light blue to blue-purple flower spikes.  It is an extremely drought-resistant plant that thrives on dry sandy soils and sends up its flower stalks in the heat of July and August.  Hoary Vervain grows in narrow upright clumps 1 to 4 feet tall with showy flowers densely packed on narrow pencil-like spikes.  The numerous flowers bloom only a few at a time from bottom to top.   The blue-purple ½ inch long flowers are used as cut flowers for bouquets and when grown in a flower garden attract butterflies.  Hoary Vervain plant foliage has a gray-green appearance that compliments surrounding greenery and is the larval host for the Common buckeye butterfly (Junonia coenia).  Hoary Vervain seeds are eaten by small mammals, prairie chickens and numerous other birds.
Verbena stricta (hoary Vervain) is easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun and often thrives in dry, sandy soils. Hoary vervain is a vigorous, clump-forming annual or short-lived perennial that grows wild in prairies, glades, thickets, fields, railroads and highway right of ways.   A common invader of overgrazed pastures this plant does not compete well in vigorous stands of native grasses.  Often will naturalize by self-seeding to form colonies. Remove the spent flowering spikes before seed matures to prevent any unwanted self-seeding.  Hoary vervain seeds need a few weeks exposure to cool moist stratification before they will germinate.  Plants are easily grown from seed usually blooming the first year after seeding and may be grown as an annual or short lived perennial.

Plant seeds in late fall/winter or cool moist stratify before planting.

Native wild Verbena stricta Hoary Vervain grows wild in prairies, glades, thickets, fields, waste ground, along railroads and roadsides and disturbed sites from Texas to Washington and eastern Canada.  Verbena stricta can be grown in dry well drained areas across the USA.
